Even though this photo was not taken by me, I was present at this Grimes concert in April 2016 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. I remember that my friends and I waited at least six hours outside the venue to make it to the front row, which was a success. This concert happened to be around Grimes’s prime because she had just released her album Art Angels a few months before, an album that beautifully merged Grimes’s experimental pop music with a new exploration of her vocals and a feminist attitude. Needless to say, there was a lot of hype for this concert, and Grimes succeeded in satisfying the hype for the crowd that day. She had some amazing openers, one of which was Christine and the Queens, a French art pop singer who almost seemed like the main act because of the amazing dancing they combined with their singing. When Grimes finally came out, the dancing continued within the crowd and continued on stage. The art and experimentation through Grimes’s songs, lighting, and movement made the place a feel-good escape. Even when Grimes was off stage, the feeling wasn’t over since Grimes honored Prince, who had just passed away that day, by dressing the Shrine in purple lightning and playing his song “Let’s Get Crazy” for everyone to dance to.
