The Netflix original hit, Emily in Paris left audiences inspired to revamp their own style. Emily inspired the boss bitch in all of us whether it was through steadfast dedication to her career, boldness in her love life or fashion that was colorful and creative while staying true to the chic sophistication of business-wear.
While protagonist Emily Cooper’s wardrobe was clearly designed for a glamorous fictional interpretation of what working at a marketing firm actually is, there’s a great deal of fashion knowledge to take away from the show. Stylist and legendary costume designer, Patricia Field, developed Cooper’s style with a goal in mind: To spice up business-style with not-so-typical sophistication.
Cooper wears several statement outfits throughout the season, many of which inspired conversation in the fashion community. Here are some of her most notable ensembles:
1. The first day-fit
On her first day at the Paris office, Cooper wants to make a meaningful first impression. Her snake-print skirt and graphic collared shirt certainly make for a memorable impression, though for the chic and fashionably conservative French marketing firm, she seems to have missed the mark. But from an American perspective there’s a lot to unpack.
The skirt and graphic top combo clash in a strangely stylish way. Her outfit screams at your eyes while somehow making just enough sense to be considered fashionable. While the combination is bold for the workplace, Cooper’s style can be simplified down to a patterned skirt and a layered button-down moment for a classier business-style dress code.
2. Cueless, but make it French
As Cooper settles into her job in Paris, she experiments with staple Parisian accessories such as her red beret. In this scene, she’s out of the office working at a video-shoot for a client. She opts for a bold two-piece set, channeling Cher from Clueless, but keeps it modern by swapping shorts for Cher’s skirt. She also tones it down with black and white gingham instead of Cher’s bright yellow. But the red beret brings a classic French touch as well as staying true to Cooper’s colorful style. This outfit could easily be implemented into a more conservative office wardrobe by swapping pants for the shorts.
3. Tres Vert
Cooper lives for a monochromatic moment. Throughout the season, she plays with bright tones and layers coordinating patterns. She also knows how to get noticed in a crowd. Cooper wears an all-green get-up to stand out at a company’s marketing event, clad in a green plaid dress and another ode to Parisian style, a matching bandana around her neck. She tops it off with a matching bucket hat and could have stopped there. But Cooper stays true to herself and takes it up a notch with a kelly green peacoat and an avocado green bag. Do the colors go? No. Does Cooper somehow make it work? Yes. Even better, this is a simple outfit that can be redone in any color and with practically any pieces in your wardrobe.
